The Maritime Industry
Port industry, fishing industry, services, transport, manufacturing industry and much more: The maritime industry of Lübeck covers many different facets and areas and unites a not inconsiderable number of businesses and employees. The direct sea connection, good onward connection to the hinterland and the close proximity to Hamburg, Scandinavia and the Baltic area are true driving forces for all the different branches of the maritime industry.
But also classic professions of this industrial branch can be found in Lübeck: The largest boat building school in Germany is located on Priwall, offering dual education in the field of boat building. Lübeck's trade workmanship as well as the shipbuilding yards focus their efforts on the construction of boats and yachts – as well as their maintenance and winter storage. The resident suppliers in the areas of mechanical engineering, maritime engineering and security technology as well as communication technology widen the product range.
Also the areas research and development can be associated with parts of the maritime industry in Lübeck. Next to large companies like Dräger, who lead the development in the area “Navy & Offshore“, the Fraunhofer EMB is active in the areas of marine biotechnology and cellular technology. The areas aquaculture of fish, clams and algae as well as water testing and breeding belong to their core competences. The research centre is also involved in the areas of water purification and the conservation of water.
