The Food Industry
With the BalticSea at its doorstep and fertile land in the region, Lübeck has always been able to offer a wide range of culinary treasures. Thanks to its great strategic position which helped Lübeck become one of the most vital German and European trade and transport hubs, it enabled the food industry to steadily grow and develop over the centuries. Today, this line of business is one of the location's economic anchors. With 100 businesses. With an annual turnover of over 550 million Euros. And with more than 4,500 people employed in the key areas of confectionery and cereal production, fish processing as well as wholesale and mechanical engineering for the food processing industry.
Initiative for the future
Founded in Lübeck and now the central industry network of the food industry in Northern Germany: The development of foodRegio is a true success story. Since 2005, foodRegio is active on many different levels to increase the competitiveness of its member companies. About 70 members from all five federal states that make up northern Germany are engaged in nine themed focus groups, from apprenticeship to certification, as well as joint projects and campaigns. How businesses, universities and regions work together can be found on the website of foodRegio. The network's head office is located in the office building of Wirtschaftsförderung Lübeck.
